Letter from the Principal

Dear Robert Smalls International Academy Community,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! I hope that you have enjoyed your summer with much rest and family time. I was able to travel to Michigan with my wife and two kids to visit our extended family. During this time, I reflected on our Beaufort community and the joy and honor it brings to me to be the leader at Robert Smalls International Academy.

Last year brought challenges as we adjusted back to school from COVID and it brought many successes. We saw an increase in 4% in our academic areas of Reading, Math, and Science. This is a huge accomplishment for our children and our school.

As we embark on a new journey this year, I am really excited for the additions to our Robert Smalls family. We have added multiple positions to better serve our students. Master teacher, an additional literacy coach,  and a career development facilitator just to name a few.

We are adjusting some roles this year as well. While I am still the principal of preK-8, I will be focusing heavily on building a strong literary foundation for grades k-5. Mrs. Washington will be focused on our 6th grade academy and helping our 6th graders adjust to life as a middle schooler. Mrs. Goudy will lead our 7th and 8th grade teams. These shifts will allow us to have a laser-like focus on these grade levels and support when necessary.

In addition to our leadership focus, we will have the following focus:

Grades K-5                                                                   Grades 6-8
PHONICS                                                                      Synergy Circle
Balanced Literacy Block                                           Generals Time
LETRS (brain research of reading)                         bell to bell instruction

These foci will lay the foundation for our children to be lifelong learners that take control of their future.

We have been hard at work preparing for this school year; I am thrilled with the changes that we have made, and know that we still have more changes to make in order to make Robert Smalls Academy the school our community deserves. I am looking forward to working alongside you in the educational journey of our children.

One love,
Bradley Tarrance
