Kathy Bays

Hello My Name Is...
Dr. Bays
Kathy Bays

After serving as an officer in the U.S. Army for five years and attaining the rank of Captain, I chose to continue serving my country as an educator.  This year marks my 24th year of teaching, and I have taught at all levels, from primary grades to college.  I strongly believe that the strength of our nation lies within our people, and that building and developing the capacity of participants in a democracy is the purpose of education.  To that end, I stress the interdisciplinary nature of learning and knowledge in my teaching practice, and guide students in the construction of their epistemological systems.  Reading comprehension, analysis, and composition skills form the core of my teaching practice.  I hold bachelor's degrees in Political Science and Slavic Studies, a Master's Degree in History with a specialization in Teaching History, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership (both TK-12 & Community College Leadership Tracks) from California State University, Fresno.

My husband works for the National Park Service, and we moved to Beaufort in January 2019 when he was selected for his position here.  We have two kids - a son who is a geologist and will begin teaching community college geology courses soon, and a daughter who will start veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania this fall.   We love animals, bird-watching, looking for sharks' teeth on the amazing Low Country beaches, and the many other recreational opportunities this area provides!
