Cheri Simon 

Cherie Simon was an educator in the state of Maryland for 31 years. She held several different positions in education such as a classroom teacher in the primary grades, a Title I Intervention Teacher for grades prek-5, an Intervention Coach, and most recently a District Wide Title I Literacy Coach.

As a District Wide Literacy Coach, she worked collaboratively with the District Reading Supervisor to analyze district and school level data to make decisions on curriculum, reading programs, interventions and professional development for Wicomico County in Maryland.  She wrote county curriculum, lead RTI (Response to Intervention) meetings, chaired the Intervention PLCs (Professional Learning Communities) for interventionists and provided County Wide Professional Development in the areas of: Phonics, BAS (Benchmark Assessment System), LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention), Reader’s Workshop, Guided Reading for new teachers and provided virtual bi-monthly professional development on instructional methodologies to all second-grade teachers in the district. She was awarded Outstanding Mentor in 2014-2014 from Salisbury University. She was a member of SoMLA (State of Maryland Literacy Association) and ILA (International Literacy Association.)

She has attended The National ESEA Conference and the International Literacy Association Conference several times. She has received certificates from the following trainings:  LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) by Voyager Sopris Learning, Teaching Readers Who Struggle (Fountas and Pinnell),  Intervening for Literacy Success with Intermediate, Middle, and Secondary Students (Fountas and Pinnell), Blended Learning (Caitlyn Tucker), Reading Inspires Students to Excel (RISE) by Jan Richardson, 95% Group (Susan Hall), Fundations-Wilson Language Training, Read Live/Naturally, SOAR to Success,  and Comprehension Toolkit by Ann Goudvis.

She recently moved to Bluffton with her husband. She loves to spend her free time visiting her two girls and son-in-law. In her free time, you will find Cherie reading on the beach or traveling with her husband.

She is excited to join the wonderful staff at Robert Smalls International Academy this coming school year. She strongly believes all scholars can succeed in literacy learning through teacher expertise. She believes professional development that supports responsive teaching and understanding what our scholars need to know to grow as readers is the key. She is happy to be a part of the support system that will foster lifelong learners and support the wonderful teaching staff at RSIA.
