Hello My Name Is...

Donna Martin

Donna Martin

I am a LowCountry native and have been a reading / ELA educator for seventeen years, fifteen years at Robert Smalls. Since the young age of two, I have been in love with reading. Early on, traveling with characters on unbelievable adventures or later with heroic explorers in space and presently immersing myself in 19th century poetry and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, I am hungry for the written word.  With joyful abandon I easily become a time traveler. My goal as a literacy teacher is to ignite a passion for reading within every student. Read, read for enjoyment, ask questions, seek answers and celebrate new learning.  I exhort, “Read like a wolf eats…Voraciously.”

I am a highly qualified middle school teacher in reading, gifted and talented endorsed, as well as, a fellow in the National Writing Project, the LowCountry Chapter at the Citadel. I teach three levels of reading – Standard, Advanced and English 1. In the classroom four truths guide my instruction: Reading improves reading; Reading inspires writing; Writing improves writing; Thinking improves thinking. This is my mantra all year.  My classroom evolves into a learning community of global thinkers with diverse perspectives. To be sure, I have the Best job in the world!
